What's In Season January 2025

What's In Season January 2025

Cauli-power!

It's not the most exciting time for veg here in the UK. Roots and greens abound, but it's much the same as pre-Christmas.

Cauliflower loves cheese. Think hearty winter classics like cauliflower cheese, cauli mac and cheese or cauliflower and cheddar soup - all variations on the same thing!

Cauliflowers also make a great salad vegatable though - roasted in a warm winter salad or raw for a healthy crunch.

Here are some of my favourite cauliflower salads.

Finely chopped cauliflower makes a delicious winter tabbouleh with the addition of pomegranate for colour and a flavour pop.

St John keep the florets whole for their chunky Butter bean, leek and cauliflower salad - it sounds unpromising, but with lots of olive oil and crushed garlic it's a wonderful example of something that's better than the sum of its parts.

Finally, a roasted cauliflower salad from Yotam: Roasted Cauliflower and Hazelnut Salad is a nutty, nubbly winter feast.

Blood Oranges!

This is not the most varied time of year for fruit - still apples and pears here in the UK. You'll be forgiven for looking abroad where citrus fruits, especially when blood oranges are in season.

We're used to being able to get most fruit all year round - which makes the few months where blood oranges are available all the more exciting.

I'd rarely cook with them, but they do make a refreshing addition to a crisp salad - blood orange and fennel being the classic. Alternatively they make a lovely addition to a cake - try a blood orange drizzle cake instead of the classic lemon.

Alternatively why not make Blood Orange Rosemary marmalade - always a favourite of ours here at Good Food and a great way to keep blood orange season going into the summer!
