There's lots in season in May: broccoli, carrots, jersey royals, lettuce & salad leaves, new potatoes, peas, radishes, rocket, samphire, spinach, spring onions, watercress and wild nettles - but it's all about the asparagus for us...
We get ours from Clive in Cambridgeshire. It's organic and outdoor grown. It's time-consuming work to grow organically, each crop must be in the ground 2 years before it can be harvested for the first time.
Once picked, asparagus rapidly loses flavour and tenderness, so it really is worth eating it on the day you buy it. If that isn't possible, store asparagus in the fridge with a damp paper towel wrapped around the bottom of the stalks and you can get away with keeping it for a couple of days.
